以歌劇改革者聞名的十八世紀作曲家葛路克，在1762年譜寫了具有里程碑意義的《奧菲斯與尤麗迪茜》，該劇簡化音樂及情節、摒棄傳統的炫技要求，提倡自然純樸的表現、強調深刻的內容與真實性，將他「音樂為戲劇服務」的理想付諸實行。

十年之後，葛路克在巴黎得到自己以前的學生、法國瑪莉王后的支持，於歌劇院推出了六部作品，1779年的《伊菲姬妮在陶里德》承接六部中的第一部。《伊菲姬妮在奧里德》劇本來自尤里庇底斯筆下的希臘神話：麥錫尼國王阿加曼農為贏得戰爭，將女兒伊菲姬妮獻上祭壇，不料「祭品」被狩獵女神阿特密斯所救、帶到陶里德當祭司。阿加曼農之妻為報復丈夫犧牲女兒，刺殺了阿加曼農；十年之後，他們的兒子，也就是伊菲姬妮的兄弟奧列斯特，又殺了母親，以報殺父之仇，但他也由於弒母之罪被復仇女神追殺，最終在雅典法庭上被判無罪，並接到阿波羅的神諭，叫他去陶里斯半島奪回一件神器。奧列斯特潛入島上後被伏，原本要死在伊菲姬妮的祭臺之上，臨死之前，這對兄妹意外相認，並合力擊退島上蠻族，返回希臘。

在自己這最後一齣成功大作裡，葛路克以人物內心的情感衝突為主軸，強化詠嘆調的作用，影響了包括白遼士、華格納等無數後輩。本輯收錄慕提1983年在史卡拉歌劇院指揮的著名版本，以現代技術類比重製，堪為葛路克作品愛好者不可忽視的經典。
