The French pianist Ismael Margain, newly signed up with naive, creates a sensitive and meaningful juxtaposition of two major composers of piano repertoire, Frederic Chopin and Gabriel Faure.

In spite of its title, this first album by the French pianist recorded under the naive label is anything but improvised: Ismael Margain cleverly structures the meeting between two piano geniuses, Frederic Chopin and Gabriel Faure, highlighting an "obvious kinship between their styles and in their inspiration," without confusing or misrepresenting their uniqueness. The impromptu form, common to both composers – four for the first, six for the second –, is the starting point for this logical comparison, organising diversity of atmosphere around similar tonalities.

An etude, a berceuse and the Fantaisie-Impromptu by Chopin are also included in the programme, ensuring the strict alternation of each composer.

"For today''s performer," he says, "the idea is to find, in both Chopin and Faure, the balance between the improvised and spontaneous impromptu and the sophistication of a finely polished composition, that is fairly polyphonic, although relatively condensed."

In these pages, which, rather than simply demonstrating strength or virtuosity, exact high standards of phrasing, legato, dexterity and agility, Ismael Margain focuses on balance and nuance, and "reproduces all the details, while maintaining the exuberance and energy". Faure''s Improvisation op.84 enables him to end this boldly romantic programme by an improvisation of his own, played as an encore as he does in concerts.
