The last few years has seen a flurry of activity around the Replacements, with a smash hit reunion tour, the highly acclaimed biography on the band ‘Trouble Boys: The True Story of The Replacements’ by Bob Mehr, and a slew of reissues from Rhino, including two 4 album vinyl boxes chronicling the Twin/Tone and Sire Records eras , and a series of breakout LP releases. The biography was an over-the-top success, with over 30,000 copies of the hardcover edition shipped in the US (with the paperback due June 2017 this year), and across the vinyl catalog, over 63,000 LPs shipped by Warner Music in America (with the total even higher factoring in the rest of the world). That includes over 9,000 copies of the 2016 breakout of the band’s classic ‘Let It Be’ album. It goes without saying, there are a ton of avid fans of the ‘Mats out there!!
For Sale: Live at Maxwell’s 1986 is the first official delve into the vaults for The Replacements since the 2008 expanded CD reissues, and hopefully the first of a series of albums of unreleased material. And what better place to start that with this live recording from Maxwell’s in 1986, a relic from the much beloved era of the band with Bob Stinson as the guitarist.
This was a recording made of the band at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ – one of their favorite venues – in February 1986. A recording commissioned by Sire/Warner Bros, in order to capture the Replacements in their natural club environment. This 29-song performance, captures the Replacements just a couple weeks removed from their performance on Saturday Night Live, with a set list touches on all five of the band’s albums to that point, plus a few rarities and covers. And features the revered Tommy, Paul, Bob and Chris line-up. It’s a classic Replacements show, incendiary, at times sloppy, but with all the hallmarks that made the band such fan favorites. A show that, in a 2014 piece, Pitchfork described as “a fiery, focused set that would make a true believer out of any skeptic. Not that the band had turned into a slick outfit by any means; the ‘Mats wouldn’t be the ‘Mats if they weren’t teetering on the edge of complete collapse. It’s that delicious tension that makes this show such a ragged, glorious pleasure.”
Recorded to 24 track tape, and sitting in the vaults since, it was mixed in 2008, & then proceeded to sit in the vaults again! Now mastered by Howie Weinberg, the legendary show will be finally available in official form, with unreleased photos, and liner notes from aforementioned Replacements’ biographer Bob Mehr.
