《約翰受難曲》是巴哈三部耶穌受難曲的第一部，以新約聖經約翰福音裡耶穌受難的故事為內容，其間也穿插其他福音的片段，與《馬太受難曲》都是巴哈藝術價值極高的宗教作品。巴哈在《約翰受難曲》中借用了漢堡地區的受難樂，即神劇的風格，並把比喻的形象納入歌詞當中，於是具有禮拜儀式與訓誡意味的受難曲，一轉而為富有協奏風格、獨唱與宣敘調與讚美歌的受難曲，巴哈讓受難曲藉由宗教的力量重生。
這張DVD於1986年6月錄製於奧地利格拉茲，與其他版本最大的不同點，在於所有的聲樂部分都由男聲演唱：由德國巴伐利亞托澤少年合唱團演唱女高音與次女高音的詠嘆調，男聲的獨唱部分則再細分，由四名音質不同的聲樂家擔任。哈農庫特的詮釋傳達出巴哈音樂中的莊嚴與超然，比起其他的版本更讓人感到驚心動魄。
