In 2025, France will celebrate the 140th anniversary of Victor Hugo's death, which occurred on May 22, 1885. Poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, politician and activist, Hugo was a multifaceted figure who illuminated the 19th century. With the album Choses vues… et chantees! – The Voices of Victor Hugo, Pauline Courtin, Antoine Palloc and Christophe Barbier pay tribute to this towering figure. Soprano, pianist and narrator weave a dialogue between music and literature, combining songs composed on Hugo's poetry by Faure, Bizet, Liszt, Hahn, and Britten, with excerpts from Choses vues — a deeply personal journal chronicling a life of engagement. This musical reinterpretation highlights the enduring relevance of Hugo's thought, and reminds us how his visionary optimism can still light our way today.
